EU Commission Proposes Kids Act to Shield Children from Social Media Harms
The European Commission has put forward the Kids Act to establish stronger safeguards for minors on social media platforms. The regulation adopts a differentiated strategy that recognizes varying sensitivities across age groups. Under the proposal children under 13 will have no access to social media while those between 13 and 15 will be restricted to parent-supervised mini accounts limited to one hour per day. Users aged 15 to 18 will benefit from mandatory safe design features on platforms. The Commission also rejects the notion that big tech influence cannot be curbed and highlights risks such as addictive design and AI-generated explicit imagery.
